“Growing up in the country I was fortunate to experience nature in all its diversity…long hikes in the woodland where deer freely roamed as well as an occasional meeting with a skunk or bear!  Adventure always abounded and often times it was just as close as my own backyard with raccoons, turtles & dragonflies…”

A Nature Story within a Story at Wild River State Park

Pierre Jacques Pleau
MN Master Naturalist

During Pierre’s presentation at WRSP Amphitheater, he recounted an unusual encounter that his calico cat, Bubbles, had with a whitetail deer. Illustrating his story with sound effects and snatches of music on the fiddle, Pierre told about the surprising moment when a whitetail deer peeked out of the woods and walked right over to enjoy the fiddle music and the wildflowers in which Bubbles was hidden…
At the presentation, a similar experience demonstrating the language of music happened for the visitors to WRSP.  While Pierre was playing a fiddle tune medley, visitors observed a family of whitetail deer (2 does and 2 spotted fawns) slowly walking along behind the amphitheater enjoying the music from the woods.  Afterwards, Pierre reflected on the gift of being able to share this experience.  “It’s amazing how wild animals and pets love music.  It’s a universal language for people as well.”

Painted Turtles!

“While children were playing the Tree Id Game at my booth at a festival, just a few feet away, Painted Turtles started emerging from their nest.  To protect the turtles from being trampled by festivalgoers the children sat in a ring around the nest and watched in amazement as the little turtles explored their new surroundings.  After all of the turtles emerged, the children were delighted to help carry them to safety, close by at the edge of the marshland.”

Excerpt from Pierre Jacques Pleau’s Bio
Q:        You  wrote and directed 3 youth musicals set in the mid 1800’s and then followed these musicals with 2 set in the early 1900’s.  How does your last musical, Land, Air & Water tie into these?

A:        Land, Air & Water, in a sense, is a culmination of the 5 previous musicals.  The youth musical series weaves three centuries together through traditions and values that are carried on by descendants.  The final musical, Land, Air & Water is set in the present times and is focused on our environment.

Q:        From 2008-2011 you wrote these 6 youth musicals including the music and lyrics.  How many songs in all and where were they originally performed?

A:        The musicals were performed at NBAHS Edelstein Auditorium in North Branch...  The 6 musicals include 69 songs and 18 instrumental pieces, many of which I now sing &/or play in my music & storytelling performances.

Q:        As a speaker, musician and Minnesota Master Naturalist you’ve been giving musical theater environmental education presentations for children and families.  What themes do you currently offer?

A:        Since 2011, I've been giving interactive presentations based upon the Musical Land, Air & Water, which cover many environmental topics.  Presentations can be catered to a group’s needs.  For example, I’ve been giving annual interactive performances on water education for 5th graders at Chisago County Children’s Water Fest.
